On 31 October 2022, PeaceTrees VietNam is happy to visit Bac Dinh Secondary School to present awards to 10 students who won the writing and painting contest “FOR A WORLD WITHOUT EXPLOSIVE ORDNANCE ACCIDENTs” having been launched in an explosive ordnance risk education event organized at this school on 16 September 2022. It is the third event that has been held since the start of this year by PeaceTrees VietNam in Quang Binh.

After one month of contest-launching, we received many high-quality paintings and essays that contained meaningful safety messages on explosive ordnance risk education. At the awarding ceremony, Nguyen Tam Anh, a thirteen-year-old student, who won the first prize, emotionally shared “I am aware of some risks of explosive ordnances through my grandmother’s stories but I had not known any safe actions that I should take to protect myself when I encounter unexploded ordnances when I am on the way to school or help my parents to do farming works on the field until I attended the PeaceTrees Vietnam-held EORE event at my school”. Also in his essay, he expressed his desire to become an EORE extensionist to tell his friends to stay away from unexploded ordnances and avoid unexpected accidents.

After nearly five decades since the end of the conflict, explosive remnants of war still pose a big threat to local people, especially children in many parts of Quang Binh province. PeaceTrees Vietnam continues to deliver EORE interventions at schools in the upcoming period in order to reduce unexpected EO accidents among school children.
