On 04/04/2023, PeaceTrees VietNam successfully organized an Explosive Ordnance Risk Education event for students of Thuan Duc Primary & Secondary School, Dong Hoi City, Quang Binh Province. This is also the seventh event organized by PTVN through the sponsorship of Rotary International. The activity is even more meaningful when it took place right on the International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action April 4th.

Through the interactive information-sharing and quizzes (so-called “Ring the Gold Bell”), the program integrated safety messages to help the students to practice proper behaviors with EO encountered in the course of their life. Duong Viet Hoang, a class-92 pupil, shared “The quizzes contest is very interesting and competitive. I tried my best to win the contest. After this program, I know how to report if I accidentally discover explosives. I will tell my friends that they should stay away from any items of EO encountered, and immediately report them to elders or through the hotline number 18001741”.
Although the war has ended for many decades, Quang Binh and Quang Tri are still places with high levels of UXO contamination, where mines and explosives still continue to pose a threat to the health and life of local communities and constrain social-economic development.

With the objective of minimizing EO accidents among the affected communities, especially the target group of children, PeaceTrees VietNam has implemented the Explosive Ordnance Risk Education program in schools aims to raise the student’s awareness of the threats of explosive ordnances, equipping them with knowledge and skills necessary to protect themselves.
